54-40 is a Vancouver veteran rock band that played in Vancouver last night (February 9th) in a recorded concert. I heard a recording from the show just hours after the show ended on CBCRadio2 Morning with Tom Powers. I was in awe of what I heard from a band that started when I was just a little kid! They formed in 1981 and released their first album (54-40) in 1986. Band members are Neil Osborne (vocals and guitar), Brad Merrit (bass), Matt Johnson (drums) and Phil Comparelli (guitar). Recently, Neil Osborne was quoted as saying that their recent music is about “acknowledging what’s happening” and “looking for something valid and significant”. This is fantastic and so , well, 54-40. Some of Neil Osborne’s other comments about the band from an interview with Justin Brake of the The Telegram (a St. John’s, Newfoundland newspaper) are quoted on my journal page today. I applied the colours with the band in mind and then used the quotes that fit the colours and contours of the work. Enjoy, listen to 54-40 and keep making art.
